Applied mathematics. Parallel computing. Reduced-order modeling and control. Research Experience

 

Computational materials research and macroscopic theoretical analysis for energy applications  (January 2008 - Present)

Current research, in collaboration with Robert Bosch LLC and Central Michigan University, focuses on computational study of the electronic structures of thermoelectric materials, using a DFT (density functional theory) software package (Quantum-ESPRESSO):

Evaluation of thermoelectric properties including the Seebeck coefficient and the electrical conductivity;

DFPT studies of lattice vibration characteristics; 

Influence of compositions and structures on phonon dispersion curves;

Thermodynamic properties of thermoelectric materials with quasi-harmonic approximation. 

Issues on design and analysis of energy conversion systems are also considered in theory and numerics:

Performance analysis of thermoelectric energy conversion under high temperature difference;

Impact of thermal stress and its minimization via geometric optimization;

Integration of alternative energy technology within conventional devices.

 

Computational particle methods and their applications in thermo-fluid systems

Doctoral research focused on numerical modeling & massively parallel simulation using particles:

Development of a three-dimensional vortex filament simulation of a transverse jet at a finite Reynolds number

Rigorous formulation of consistent vorticity boundary conditions around the jet nozzle boundary, including continued vortex lines from the wall boundary layer;

Design of a Lagrangian-Eulerian hybrid scheme for treating diffusion and remeshing in vortex methods based on the vorticity redistribution method;

Theoretical investigation of the convergence of the vorticity redistribution method to the class of uniformly parabolic linear differential equations;

Development and benchmarking of a code for one-dimensional particle simulation of a nonlinear model of heat conduction in solid crystalline molecular hydrogen;

Development of a massively parallel code for treating diffusion and remeshing of vorticity field in vortex calculations using the MPI library;

Development of a fast summation algorithm for algebraic kernels in vortex simulations.

 

Modeling, analysis, and control of complex systems

Master’s degree research developed a theoretical model for thermo-acoustic instability in backward-facing step combustors, using a modern theory of linear hydrodynamic stability:

Analysis of the stability characteristics of a time-average velocity field in a backward-facing step flow;

Reduced order modeling based on POD (proper orthogonal decomposition) and Galerkin projections of governing equations;

Development of a qualitative model of thermo-acoustic instability in reacting backward-facing step flows;

One-year research for ARO dealt with the adaptive control of a linear system with uncertain time delay.

Contributed to the development of qe2boltz.py, which is a python script that converts the output of Quantum Espresso 4.3.2 or BerkeleyGW 1.0 to the input of BoltzTraP 1.2.1.

Contributed to the development of QF2, which is a MATLAB code that approximately computes quantum forces from multi-dimensional Bohmian particle distributions.
